There once was a young boy with a very bad temper. The boy’s father wanted to teach him a lesson, so he gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper he must hammer a nail into their wooden fence.

On the first day of this lesson, the little boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. He was really mad!

Over the course of the next few weeks, the little boy began to control his temper, so the number of nails that were hammered into the fence dramatically decreased.

It wasn’t long before the little boy discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Then, the day finally came when the little boy didn’t lose his temper even once, and he became so proud of himself, he couldn’t wait to tell his father.

Pleased, his father suggested that he now pull out one nail for each day that he could hold his temper.

Several weeks went by and the day finally came when the young boy was able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

Very gently, the father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.

“You have done very well, my son,” he smiled, “but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same.”

The little boy listened carefully as his father continued to speak.

“When you say things in anger, they leave permanent scars just like these. And no matter how many times you say you’re sorry, the wounds will still be there.”

“…And what is in your mouth?” Hiccup puzzled, finger raised but drooping with bewilderment.

Jack’s lips twitched cheekily he and quickly pressed his mouth to the other boy’s already open one. A tongue slipped past his crooked teeth, drawing a surprised grunt from the inquirer when something sweet rolled into his mouth and he instinctively bit down, the sprite retreating sharply.

It was sticky, but rich and slightly grainy, coating his teeth and the flavour lingered on his taste buds. It was familiar in an instant.

“A date… You actually found me a date!?” Exclaimed the Viking through his mouthful, savouring the blissful flavour. Trader Johann had brought them to Berk once, claiming they came from a place that snow never graced, and the boy had fallen in love at first bite.

However, the trader hadn’t been able to make a return trip in recent times and unfortunately Hiccup had been left completely dateless ever since. But all that deprivation seemed insignificant in light of the flavour sensation currently occurring. Green eyes brimmed with joy as they met blue, enquiring as to where Jack found the fruit.

“How?!”

“It wasn’t easy… Had to travel the desert, fight off a pack of wild monkeys but… Eh. You’re worth it.” Despite the grateful boy’s tortuously slow chewing, the fruit eventually dissolved and he allowed himself to speak.

“Thank you Jack, really… but it’s a shame the only safe place to keep it was your mouth.” Lamented the temporarily sated boy, knowing that he probably wouldn’t see another Date for a long, long time.

A Salt and pepper brow quirked. “Who said it was? I have a whole bag right here.” As good as his word, Jack pulled out a brown, drawstring pouch, opening it to reveal a mound of shining, chestnut coloured fruits. Hiccup’s sticky jaw dropped. He glanced up, stunned.

“Then what was with-?”

“It made our reunion sweeter, don’t you think?” A shining blue eye winked. Hiccup couldn’t suppress a groan, but despite the absolutely terrible pun, The shorter boy wrapped his skinny arms around the other’s sturdy neck and squeezed, not wanting to let go for a quite some time.

“I’m just glad you’re back safe…”

Chilly hands grasped Hiccup’s waist pulling him closer before enveloping him in a cool embrace of his own.

“Happy Snoggletog, Hic.”

Everyone in the Great Hall stood stunned for a moment, so quiet a dropping pin would echo, but just as quickly returned to feasting when the sentimental slush was done with.
